Album Review: Mark Ronson & The Business Intl

The UK born and US bred Mark Ronson is easily one of the most underrated musicians/producers currently on the scene. Known for its jazzy, poppy, and eclectic sounds, Ronson’s repertoire includes a variety of fresh covers as well as some amazing original masterpieces.

While his first album Here Comes the Fuzz didn’t receive the attention it deserved, Ronson’s second album, Version, got him on the charts and even won him a BRIT Award for best male artist in 2008.

His latest album Record Collection, released under the monicker “Mark Ronson & The Business INTL” is by far his best album yet. The entire album shows a fantastic balance of several genre’s of music including hip hop, electro-pop, soul, jazz, and many more. Song after song is a musical experience with amazing drumbeats, addictive melodies, and fantastic vocals.

Just as in his previous album, Ronson employs a laundry list of vocal talent in his songs including Boy George, Spank Rock, Ghostface Killah, Q-Tip, and several more. A fresh list of vocalists along with amazing musical transitions truly make the album flow well from song to song.

From start to finish, this album is easily one of the best we will see all year. It’s fresh, solid, and amazing tracks make Record Collection an album you absolutely need to listen to.

DO NOT MISS: Lucent L’amour, a festival of art, music and creativity, brought to you by The Do Lab

Lucent L'amour 2009, courtesy notcot.com

Got any Valentine’s plans yet? How about at the wee hours of the morning on Valentine’s Day? Well now you can be busy all day long thanks to the great guys at The Do Lab, the proprietors of events like Coachella. They are hosting Lucent L’amour, something that they call a “festival of art, music and creativity.” Because they know how awesome this show is going to be (as well as the knowledge of the shallow pockets of college students), they have been kind enough to offer a pretty hefty discount to anyone with a “.edu” e-mail, for more details click on this link to the Lucent L’amour website http://lucentlamour.com/student.  With over 5,000 attendees expected, this is one show you should not miss.

BASSNECTAR

The headliner for this year’s Lucent L’amour, Bassnectar (Lorin Ashton) will get you moving whether you like it or not. Hailing from San Francisco, Bassnectar is known for his eclectic style and stimulating visuals. From his slow, trip-hop sounds to his pounding dance beats, Bassnectar’s show will leave you tore up from the floor up.

STANTON WARRIORS

The breakbeat duo from Bristol is back in the States for this epic street festival, and their set will be sure to blow your mind. These DJs are masters of the remix and will undoubtedly please your audio senses with both their creative edits and original tracks. With these breakbeat champions on the bill, Lucent L’amour is an event you won’t want to miss.

N.A.S.A.

North America South America, better known by their acronym N.A.S.A., truly brings a unique sound to the bill. Comprised of DJs Squeak E. Clean and Zegon, this duo strives to bring about a sense of unity in the musical community by putting together sounds from different genres around the world. Whether it be bars from Kanye West’s tracks or funky Brazilian riffs, this diverse sound is sure to get you moving.

YARD DOGS ROAD SHOW

Lucent L’amour is chalk full of unique acts, and the Yard Dogs Road Show is no exception. With an unusual mix of cabaret, rock and roll and other strangely entertaining acts, this band will undoubtedly be a musical experience.

BEATS ANTIQUE

Hailing from Oakland, Calif., Beats Antique provides a new twist to the electronic genre.  With sounds and beats from the Middle East fused with dubstep and hip hop, Beats Antique offers a sound that you won’t find anywhere else. With live horned and string instruments, this sound will be something new for you to sink your teeth into.

ANA SIA

This California native understands the value of dance. Her live set will force you to work muscles that you had no idea you had. As a front-runner in the West Coast future sound movement, Ana Sia is an act to listen and dance along to for sure.

LAZER SWORD

Lazer Sword is the fusion of Low Limit, from San Francisco, and Lando Kal of New York. Regardless of the Star Wars allusion, Lazer Sword is pretty boss. With an ever-growing fan base, these guys are something to watch for in 2010, and you’ll experience them live at Lucent L’amour.

LYNX & JANOVER

Though they have only recently released their first collaboration, this duo has been tearing up the live circuit. They spit an interesting blend of low-tempo techno with rapping and acoustic instruments. This year at Lucent L’amour, their smooth beats will be sure to keep you entranced and wanting more.

PATRICIO

Having been a DJ in the greater Los Angeles area since the ‘90s, Patricio is what you could call a seasoned veteran. His sets are practically guaranteed to raise the energy level so high that the only thing higher is the sound level. For all you rump shakers out there, check out Patricio this year at Lucent L’amour.

ROBOT LOVE

This mysterious group is something that must be experienced first hand. The best information only claims that their influence is “static” and their biography is “music for life forms.” After sampling some tracks, it becomes clear that the latter is more appropriate. Their songs, without a hint of static, will make any “life forms” within their sphere of influence begin to boogie down. Get to Lucent L’amour early enough to hear these guys kick off the event.

In addition to the amazing musical lineup that Lucent L’amour offers, a series of art installations, as well as interactive art, will be present at the inside portion of The Shrine. This should be as much as the concerts themselves. I am envisioning a type of awesome street festival. The website even describes one of the artist collectives, Lucent Dossier Experience, as “a playground for the innovative genius child in all of us.”  It should be a very good time, to say the least.

The Rave Debate: Interview With Brent Tuttle and Ryan Coghill

This past weekend we had the pleasure of interviewing the author of one of the most talked about Vista articles to be published this semester.  In his article , Brent Tuttle explained the feelings he held towards certain “ravers” and the rave culture.  The article itself was met with much backlash from some of the student population who believed that the language used to describe the ever-expanding counter culture was too strong and generalized.  With this interview, the radio station hoped to shed light on the subject and provide a different perspective to rave culture.  Here’s how it went.

While I had strongly disagreed with Brent’s original article, the interview definitely allowed some clarity to be brought to Brent’s position.  I ultimately agreed with his stance that certain members of the rave community are responsible for giving raves such a negative connotation, but at the same time I disagreed with the generalization that was made that grouped ordinary rave goers and electro fans with the heavy drug users that exist at the extreme.

Interview with David Dewaele of 2manyDjs/Soulwax by Ariel Coto

2ManyDJ's

Hard Haunted Mansion was definitely one of the best electronic events of the Fall season.  With amazing DJs playing amazing sets, the two day event was more than enough to keep techno lovers jumping and dancing all night long.  While I was at the event, I was lucky enough to get an interview with  David Dewaele, a member of 2manyDJs and Soulwax.  I have been listening to these two electronic groups for years and getting an interview with them was a dream come true.  Here’s how most of it went:

Check out the HD Video version of the  Interview Here

How did you and your brother first get started moving towards the DJ genre?

Well Esteph has always been DJing since he was 12 or 13 and he was actually DJing with our drummer (from Soulwax).  But he moved to America and they had a few dates booked, this was in 1997.  So they had a few dates booked and Esteph asked me if I wanted to come and I stayed with him and thats it.

You guys are easily one of the best remix artists/ producers that I’ve ever seen.  When you put together a remix, what are you looking for in the song? Is there anything in particular you look for?

The song has to be already amazing so that we don’t have to do much.

Does being brothers affect the chemistry you guys have when you perform or produce?

Yeah, I guess.  I don’t know because I’ve never DJed really without him.  It’s not like I’ve had another DJ to work with but I guess it helps.

When you guys do tour, do you prefer playing as 2manyDjs or bringing the whole band as Soulwax?

What we’ve been doing the last two years is that we’ve done both.  (Esteph walks into the trailer)

What are you guys looking to bring to the show tonight? Anything different?

We are trying to bring……………….nothing.  Well, the visuals.

Are you looking to maybe trip some people out (joke) ?

Yeah maybe.  I’m very interested to see how this will go down.

As DJs you have very tough touring schedules.  How does tour life affect you?

It makes me grumpy.  It’s a very difficult question to answer because it affects us on so many levels.  But the way we do it is quite fun

From what I understand, the equipment you guys use entails live performances to  be very delicate processes.  How much preparation goes into a live set as opposed to a remix?

It’s very different.  For a live set we prepare a few weeks I guess.  For remixes, It’s just a matter of trying things and seeing what’s good.

2manyDJs, as you can see from reviews, put on the most eclectic and entertaining set of Hard Haunted Mansion’s Friday night.  These two DJs are hands down some of the hardest working and most creative DJs in the electronic scene.  From awesome remixes to insane live sets, David and his brother Esteph put forth some of the best electronic music around.  To see the entire interview on video scroll down and click on the link, but I must warn you, the sound quality fades in and out.
